Pao-Chuen Lui

Professor Lui Pao Chuen retired in 2008 after serving 41 years in MINDEF and as Singapore’s first Chief Defence Scientist in his last 22 years’ service. He is now an adviser to the National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office and to six Ministries and Government Agencies and to NUS and NTU. He serves on the board of twelve research institutes and corporations. He is Professor of Large Scale Systems Engineering in NUS since 1990. In 2002 Prof Lui received the National Science & Technology Medal “For his outstanding leadership in the buildup of science and technology capability for the nation and its exploitation for major systems of national impact”. In 2009 he received the rare Pioneer Award of International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) “for dedicating his life to systems thinking and application, resulting in both an unparalleled impact in Singapore, and advances in the development of systems engineering around the world.” In 2011 he was conferred an Honorary Fellow of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations for his contributions to the engineering fields. He was elected by the Institute of Physics of Singapore as the winner of the 2011 IPS President Medal for his contributions to the Physics community. He was also one of the eleven professors elected to be a Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Sciences and one of the 75 Fellows of the Singapore Academy of Engineering.
