John Fitzgerald is Professor and Director of Research in Computing Science at Newcastle University, UK, where he leads the Centre for Software Reliability, a group of 45 faculty, research scientists and doctoral students, who work towards technologies to support the design of trustworthy and resilient systems. His research is on rigorous model-based methods of system design. Over the last 20 years, he has helped to develop several such methods from logical foundations to tool-supported industrial applications in areas as diverse as options trading and firmware development. His current research focuses on the challenges of cooperative engineering involving multiple disciplines. He recently completed DESTECS - an EU project on co-modelling and co-simulation in the design of cyber-physical systems. He now heads the COMPASS consortium developing model-based methods and tools for engineering Systems of Systems.
